The Gadget Show - News Podcast For July 5
The Gadget Show - News 5th July (MP3 – 20.4MB – 59min 30sec)
Here’s a iTunes 4.9 special Gadget Show. I invited Kirk McElhearn on to the show, author of books like iPod & iTunes Garage and How to Do Everything with Mac OS X Tiger (How to Do Everything). We wax lyrical about the new version that includes podcast support, and then explore some of our impressions of the future. Kirk has a fascinating theory on delivering TV.
Make sure you subscribe to The Gadget Show in iTunes by clicking here and then clicking the subscribe button. I’d love to see the show in the top 100 because we need more “indie” podcasts.
Email comments to Richard, or leave your audio comments or questions via Skype.

In Australia the Superbowl is usually shown on Pay TV (Foxtel) usually on either one of the Fox Sports channels or ESPN depending who has the rights for broadcast for that year. SBS also show it live on free to air TV.

Through out this whole program, the only thing I kept thinking was that Kirk McElhearn was just making this up as he went along. I can over-look the “Apple Fan Boy - Jobbs can do no wrong” mentality but some of his comments made no sense at all. He claims that movies are too long and would not be easily downloaded then makes the claim that downloading sports is the future. How will a one and a half hour movie take longer to download than a four hour baseball game? He also made a remark about how making podcasting easier will be bad for the genre. This is perhaps the most idiotic thing I have ever heard in my life. How about if I decide I am going to fix the, how you put it “signal to noise ratio” on your television? I decide that all the channels except one are noise and now you have one channel to watch. Would you be happy? I think not. That so called noise may actually be someones signal. Did you ever think you in fact could be someone’s noise? I doubt that thought ever crossed your mind. Choice is never a bad thing. Even a bunch of bad choices are better than no choice at all. I think in the rush to make a buck of off an exploding technology the spirit of podcasting is being swept aside. ClearChannel will be here soon enough.

Gee, sorry I sound like a fanboy… I am certainly not that. In fact, if you go to my website, you’ll see a pretty scathing complaint about porn podcasts, as well as quite a few articles critical of Apple products or features.
Anyway, regarding sports. The thing about sports is you can break up the download into innings, quarters or whatever. Also, the quality required for sports is much lower than movies; you won’t need HD baseball games. You can use a small size video, and higher compression, something movie viewers won’t accept.
As for podcasts being too easy, yes. They’re already like blogs, 95% of which are diaries of what people fed their cats. Of course somone’s noise could be another person’s signal. However, when you get podcasts such as the guy who reads a page of a dictionary every day, you reach the apex of futility. Let him do it; it’s fine with me. He won’t get many listeners.
Ah, the “spirit”… Here’s the podcasting fanboy attitude. “The big money has ruined the spirit of [enter your favorite whatever here].” Geez, if I had a buck for every time I’ve heard that… Did you notice that the “big money” in this case is, first and foremost, Adam Curry? He’s not only “sold out” to Apple, producing a high-profile podcast for them, but is selling (gasp!) commercial software for recording and creating podcasts. Is anyone criticizing that? The fact that the godfather of podcasts wants to make a living?
As for ClearChannel, yes; they’ll be hear soon. But you don’t have to buy what they offer. It’s not like radio where you have a limited number of choices (ie frequencies). Apple will sell podcasts, or will provide podcasts that contain commercials. It’s a given. So get used to it.

Thank you for your reply Kirk. I’m sorry if I seemed overly critical of your views. I certainly would not classify myself as a podcasting ‘fanboy’. In fact I have only been a regular listener of podcasts for a few months. Adam Curry? Personally I couldn’t stand him when he was on MTV (yes I am that old) and I think his podcast is one big ego trip. When I say ’spirit’ I am referring to the open nature of the genre. When does eliminating the noise become outright censorship? Why should there not be porn podcasts? I’ll grant you that children should not be listening to them but do you really think that ‘click yes I’m 18′ is enough to stop someone underage from going to a site online and viewing things much worse than an explicit audio recording? Porn is already online and there is nothing you can do about it, As for people not wanting sports in hidef I think you are way off base there. Maybe things are different in France but if you go into any quality electronics store in the states you will find salesmen pitching hidef sets to men using sports as the draw. Just look at how many new big screen TVs are sold the week before the Superbowl. As to your comment about the guy who reads the page from the dictionary, I have never heard this podcast so I can’t comment on the production quality, but I can tell you with certainty that his content is more educational than just about anything on television. That may be the only reason he will have no listeners and ‘I’m a pilot now’ Adam Curry continues to rake them in. Like I said to each his own. Again I thank you for your response and hope you didn’t take my reply personally. I just felt the need to present a differing viewpoint. Keep up the good work and I will definitely check out your website when I get the chance,

Excellent show. Having downloaded iTunes 4.9 the other day it gave a good insight of all the new features.

Hi guys,
If your doing a show on Podcasting and listening to Sports Podcasts, check out the First Footy Podcast on the Net, www.footytalk.com.au. Great show and a real contrast to TPN’s very own AFL Show.
