Apple on x86.
The world is abuzz about Apple again. It seems keeping secrets is certainly the way ahead for press announcements. Nothing can light up the blogosphere like an Apple rumour.
I’ve read a few people suggesting it’s a bold move. I don’t think it is at all. In fact it will be one of the single smartest ones that Apple has made. If done right, anyone with a PC will be able to make the move to OS X, which right now, is Apple’s major differentiator.
Russell Beattie is concerned that no one will buy an Apple while they wait for the new x86 system to ship. If the rumor is true, trust me, they’ve already compiled on Intel. In fact Scoble says as much. They’ve probably already got a product set for release. After all, in most instances Apple has a product ready when they make an announcement. By the end of a keynote people are sprinting down to the local Apple store.
Here’s a thought. Why won’t they release OS X on PowerPC and Intel. Support for competing chip sets doesn’t mean they have to pan one all together. How many different processors does Windows run on?
Of course the announcement could also be that the Apple Tablet is using an Intel CPU. We’ve already seen the patent.
I’d consider splashing out the two hundred bucks for my mother’s PC just so I can reduce the support calls I get for Windows help.
UPDATE : Here is more interesting speculation, and that it’s not a CPU deal, but “the companies are getting together to discuss WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access)”.
