On Mobile Network Security.
T-Mobile is in a world of public relations pain at the moment. Not only has Paris been exposed, yet again, but now the voicemail system has been shown to be insanely insecure. To the point where it’ll allow the cracker to make outgoing calls. If I was a T-Mobile user, I’d be thinking of changing to a new provider.
Is this an industry wide problem with mobile carriers? Has it grown so quickly that they’ve ignored basic security practice to establish a market? Historically telephone networks have never been known to be secure. Look at what Mitnick achieved in the eighties and nineties. It’s no doubt a historical artifact because it’s assumed that the technical expertise is not within the publics reach. But with cellular networks touted as the next generation in communications platforms, and the public becoming more technical savvy, these issues need to be tightened up, and quickly.
